Kiichiro Okano (1917-1995) of Suruga Bank (founded by Kitaro Okano, who turned 100 in 1963), opened a museum on 23 November 1973, housing the artworks of Bernard Buffet. The museum is located at Mishima city, Shizuoka prefecture, Japan.

Mr Okano’s collection numbers about 1,800 (Suruga Bank website), and is the only museum in the world dedicated solely to the art of the French painter. Scattered in private collections around the world, Bernard Buffet created over 8,000 works of art (oil paintings, watercolours, engravings, lithographs, and sculptures), as many as that of Renoir and Picasso.
