Autumn Events in Asakusa: The Shirasagi-no-mai (the white heron dance), is a Shinto ritual dating over 1000 years ago and has its roots in the Gion Festival of Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto. It was performed to drive out the plague.

The Shirasagi-no-mai performed at Senso-ji Temple is based on the Kyoto tradition. It provides a glimpse into the customs of the Heian period (794-1192).
